Starting a website on a real product, advice?

    Guys,

I just bought a very cool domain name. It is the exact product I want to promote. Now I want to have a dutch version and a global version.

    My question:

What language should I place in the default? And should I use an automatic GEO detector that will redirect to the right language?

Should I do dutch on the main page (as I want it to do the best in dutch) and make a www.domain.com/en/ for the english version? I never done a site in two languages, but I might want to do it in german too in a later stadium, so that should go at www.domain.com/de/ ?

Any suggestions on how to do this in the proper way? What will be the best for the website?

    Thanks in advance,

I make it a policy to not use a product name in the domain name unless I have permission to do so from the manufacturer or owner. Otherwise I run the risk of wasting my time, because I will most likely get a cease and desist letter from an attorney for the company. Then I will just have to take the site down and I have wasted my research, site building and link building time.

I have read so many examples of these letters here at this forum and other internet marketing forums. I think it is a good policy to avoid these letters by avoiding buying such a domain.

I do not know the answer to your specific question about using two languages. I trust someone else will answer soon. Regardless if you build on the domain you already have or a different one, it will be very useful info for you.

Good luck with your site, whatever you choose to do.

usually "global version" aka english would be at www.domain.com and local versions in subdirectories. just my opinion.

I think you should know your target maket at first. If you target market is around people who can read dutch or people who stay at your country better used dutch. But if your target market is global market, used english.

Yes you should use a geo script that will display different content according to where your visitor is from, no you should not redirect them. Use something that will only show the content in the appropriate language so the search engines still read it. Make sure you have something people can find to click and translate to the language of their choice in case they landed on the wrong one or speak both languages etc.

Alternatively, if you want to separate the content I would use subdomains myself. language.domain.com

I think you should go with website in English version then you can translate it in other languages...

Does anyone know a good auto GEO detection script? that redirects the visitor to the right area?

The product name is a general product though, not a brand already owned by someone else!
