Hi, I was wondering if it's difficult to start up your own webhosting company. What are the things required? (In knowledges (e.g. programming languages), and in stuff (e.g. servers)) Thanks in advanced, Skyfe.
You need large budget. Also preferably a large knowledge in servers, some software knowledge, configuring servers for clients.
You'll need around $100,000.00 to start out, more or less. You will be able to purchase around 10 servers and hire someone to complete a highly professional server for you that should cost an easy $10,000.00 for a fully made system. SYSTech knowledge helps, although hiring someone to do on-site work would probably be your best bet if your not familiar with all the information.
As webroot said, you'll most likely want to dip your toes in by Reselling in the beginning. This will allow you to determine if this is something that you would like to get into, and if it is you can expand from there.
Best way to get started is buy a reseller hosting. You need few knowledge regarding cpanel, WHM..and few more. Than upgrade to VPS..... and than finally to dedicated server,
It's a requirement to understand the type of Control Panel that you are offering inside and out as you'll want to be able to answer any questions your client may have about it.
Knowladge of " Cpanel and WHM " would be good, Most hosts use these. Linux / windows server administration skills, Though more linux than anything, as windows server are well not as " suitable " for a host. Basic linux command line understanding, and the ability to fix server issues and problems via command line. Basic coding skills such as PHP, HTML and SQL would be good but is not needed ( depends if you hire support staff ) General website issues, Such as DNS related issues, Outages ect. Then again, if you are not going to hire someone you would need skills in clustering and load balancing your servers.
Thanks all. Well I've got a VPS, but no idea how to use it for my hosting ... Where should I learn these stuff? EDIT: Btw, the control panel of my VPS is using Webmin.
Well Download a copy of linux ( open suse 11 ) is really good, and is what I use. Just get a feel for linux. but if you like windows you can use both OS's using a dual boot method. I can help you with linux commands / server administration ( free ) of course.
no offence or demotivating you but i think its better you first start up as a web hosting reseller (goes under your own brand), once you got engough customers and once you know the business start your own hosting company. (which needs $$$$ for servers and stuff) its a competitive field
Well, that'd be great. Well, any suggestions of good reseller companies? (Where I could get a reasonable reseller for a good price) and where should I learn those stuff that I need to know to start up my own webhosting company?
www.site5.com is really good, Look at the reseller plans, the basic plan has 1TB of bandwidth, Cpanel & WHM, Great space, As I say take a look and see what you think. What I will say from my past experiance with them, they actually " care " about you, They dont just see you as another statistic to their client numbers When you do feel like a dedicated they also offer those www.site5.com/dedicated and can move you to a dedicated box free of charge for the move. When / if you move to a server, like I said I will be more than happy to help.
Powered by WordPress .::. Designed by SiteGround Web Hosting I would never choose a host using wordpress, you have no support what I can see, and your hosting information text is annoying / hard to read.
Ah site5 looks reasonable. Can I use resellers to start a little hosting company? And how can I let people buy a plan, then have their own cpanel, etc.? I heard of Client Exec (which someone has suggested me), how about it?
Of course you can, then when you outgrow one of their plans, move up to the next one and so on and so on. Until you get to the stage where you " need " a dedicated server, they can then move all of your sites onto the server.
Yes, that was my plan if it would be possible, and it luckily is Will start small, with a reseller, then when more costumors would come, I'd be able to upgrade, and expand in this way all the way up. Though, I still need to know some things about setting up the Reseller, making people be able to buy a plan (place) on it and have their own cpanel on it. Will I need a web system for this? (Like Client Exec, if it's any good)?
When you host a reseller with site5 they give you a " free " Client Exec liscense and a link to a download to it on their servers, Then all you have to do is upload it and your good to go. Your clients will have their own cpanel.
