Starting a spin-off site... is this subdomain redirect method a good idea?

OK, I have a website that is trusted by google and ranking well.

I want to start a closely related spin-off website, and give it the best starting position possible by leveraging the (link) popularity of my current domain, but at the same time keep it fairly separate for marketing purposes. Is the following a good idea for SEO...

    1. create a subdomain for the spinoff on the current website, like this: spinoff.website.com
    2. i get the domain spinoff.com
    3. i do a 301 permanent redirect from spinoff.website.com to spinoff.com
    4. i link from a few places in website.com to spinoff.website.com

will this give some of the link popularity and trust from the original domain website.com to the new site spinoff.com, via the subdomain and permanent redirect?

will it cause any problems with the search engines?

    any better suggestions?

I dont see any problems with this. However, i am curious why you dont link directly to spinoff.com instead of doing the subdomain redirect.

the thinking was... by placing the spinoff on the subdomain, it will get some of the 'trust' of the overall domain to it. and then that 'trust' is carried over to the new separate domain via the 301 redirect. (more so than just by linking to the new separate domain and nothing else)

    would this work?

i was thinking this over a little more....

what if i started the spinoff site on a subdomain of my current trusted site, to give it the best start possible, and then when it gets some success and i want to fully brand it, i move it to its own domain and do a 301 redirect from the subdomain to there.

what is a better approach... to redirect at the very start, or when the website has bedded in on the subdomain for a while, or neither???

all advice will be gratefully appreciated (and rep given) :)

I am in the same situation, yet a little further down the road. I have setup subdomain spinoff.mainsite.com. It's built up to a PR 5 and plenty of posts. I've secured the domain spinoff and want to move the subdomain to domain. Is it a simple 301 redirect from subdomain to new spinoff domain? I assume this all has zero affect on the main site.

Thanks in advance. Curious to hear how you've made out.
