Starting a paid directory with PR 0?

I want to start a paid directory but I have dilemma:

Should I start new directory from scratch?

I prefer to do that because I will gain valuable experience and pick nice domain that's directory related and just sounds good. But the only problem is having PR of 0 and I don't think that anybody would pay for PR 0. Or maybe if I will have unique name, template, and category structure and of course a lot of submissions to other directories, then people will believe that I am serious about my directory and would purchase a link? And I think I will start from $1 for regular link and $5 for featured.(comment on prices too.)

Or should I bye one with PR?

The main benefit is having PR but a huge, extremely huge, disadvantage is that I can not find a nice domain name. All domain names I have seen so far are long, unmemorable and not directory related. Like 000directory.bz freedirect0rylink.com.au linkwebdirectoryseoaddlink.biz

Any comments are greatly appreciated, and this is my first post on DP:)

Start from scratch... those directory names suck. Look at your directory as a long-term investment and give it some added value, too... once you have PR there's a great change people will want to pay.

Agreed thoise names do blow... if they were 4-5 letters then maybe but those NO.
Since you are new to this all my strong recomendation is that you start a free directory and after you have figured out what quality is and isnt then maybe and a strong maybe some of us will invest in you... but im not investing in someone who might sell after 2 months so... and PAID directory? what will you have to offer some of us that others cant ?

just my 2 cents.. for what its worth

    thx

if you have very well designed directory, even with pr 0, people might buy links.
anyway, reputation is important. some directory owners might earn some money then vanish from the net with their domain.

well, i have seen an expired domain name related to a directory, and it was pretty decent name, without any number.

For branding, it's good to get a unique name whether it's by buying it or creating it. But generally speaking, good names are often taken as always.

i suggest that you start a PR 0 paid directory but give it a unique template and have good features which shows that you are serious about your site.

    www.idk.in << is a paid directory ... its a PR 0 at the moment

but the way i am promoting it right now it should get a good PR in the next update ...

i got 75+ link submissions so far .. all paid so u take ur pick ...

also its not about the money in the beginning ... u hav to invest some to get some bak thts how it goes man.

in the beginning your net profit will be in negatives because obviously you are spendin on advertisement and etc but later on it'll cover up once you have good Search Engine Ranking and etc.

    good luck though

Thanks for the offer. I will update you with my directory in the near future.

    [*]
Your site (idk.in) pretty much answers my question. When is the next PR update?

Thanks, everyone! Now I know that I will:

    • Spend money to gain money
    • Buy phpld 3.0
    • Buy/create unique template
    • Have unique category structure not a category dump
    • Have a number of mods

Sounds like a good strategy, my experience is that people take paid directories more seriously.

yes, that's the way it is, you will buy high pr domain, it is good to start with, but then the domain name will not match.

you can do one thing, just buy a pr3-4+ directory, which is already running, that will give you both, good domain name and high pr.

my paid directory is pr3, but then the name dose not match a directory. i don't think people will submit to a pr0 directory for any price. but then you can always start from scratch, and then slowly build pr, and once you have a good pr, you will get a lot of submission offers! cheers!:)

A domain already with PR (internal also) will speed up the process 3 to 6 months.

I just launched a new directory....got the domain name I liked. I know this is going to take time and effort to build up to a good directory with high PR so I didn't mind starting from scratch.
