I'm starting a new directory and would like to know the best place to get a script from. Can someone help?

Also, I need to be able to customize the site pretty easily as well.

    Options you got :
    1. PHPLD Directory : http://www.phplinkdirectory.com/
    2. OPENLD : http://www.openld.com/
    3. PhpLynx : You would need to register first to use it: http://www.cantufind.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=41
    4. Esyndicate : http://www.esyndicat.com/

There are lots of other out there, but those are the one i tried.

    For example others :
    5. Site Sift : http://scripts.site-sift.com/

    Overview:
PHPLD good overall but needs lots of improvement. Owner is nice and has decent attitude towards others.Support needs $10 lol.

OPENLD: Nice script also needs lots of improvement and an excellent owner/creator with nice attitude towards people.

Phplynx: People say good features but is encrypted so i am not comfortable, was not even able to install it cause they asked me to enable Globals on my server, Owner has somewhat attitude issues.

Esyndicate: Good Script, Crappy Payment Module so not worth using if planning to sell links. Owner Really good person. Support is Awful though.

Hope that helps you choose the right script.

    Regards

    Thanks for that post.

What would you say is the best FREE directory script?

Also, do I need a MySQL database?

Is there a script I can get that doesn't need to use a database?

    All Script Require:
    1. PHP
    2. Mysql

If you do not have any mysql at your hosting, i would not mind hosting one directory site for you at no cost.

There is no "BEST" free directory script, varies from user to user and their viewpoints about a directory. Some say esyndicate is best , i say its not, same with others. Try and discover it for yourself.
But i would mention this :

Lots of templates available for PHPLD directory, not many for others though.

Lots of customizations can be done to phpld example: http://www.h-log.com , i doubt i could have done that with esyndicate or phplynx. So, decide which is "BEST" for yaa.

Yes agreed. After trying several, I vote phpLD.

    • Both free and paid versions are available.
    • The script is easily customized
    • The templates are easily customized (along with several free, premade templates)
    • The support is awesome, you could have a question answered in as little as 5 minutes.

    Point by point...

    1. Encryption: I guess then you aren't comfortable using anything MicroSoft, Apple, or any of the other major software players publish either. Encryption makes it more difficult for a site to get hacked. I learned that lesson the hard way this week with my eSyndiCat directory.

    2. Globals: You know full well that issue has since been resolved. Actually, it had a lot to do with your input and that of others. Globals no longer need to be turned on for phpLynx to work.

    3. Owner's Attitude: proud of a script that was built to grow the industry as a whole. You will find the owner, his lead programmer, and several of the moderators in the forum much of the time and they offer EVERYONE free help in getting their sites up and running. Bunny, I mean paidhosting, has made this a personal issue - I have no wish to hijack your thread by getting into that.

My suggestion is the same as it always is when this question comes up - check out the support forums. Look and see how many questions are left unanswered, are answered but don't solve the problem, and how many complaints/cries for help/hacked site threads there are. Oh yes, also check the tone of the responses from the staff; some moderators can be quite condescending towards newbies and their questions.

Good luck with your new site whatever script you opt to use.

p.s for paidhosting: I'm sure Kev appreciates your including him in your list despite your somewhat inaccurate information about the phpLynx script.
