Starting a Internet website links directory

With all of the threads soliciting people to add their links to these website link directories, it got me thinking.

What is the benefit of creating and hosting one of these directories? This may be intro101 stuff for most of you, but I'm new to the biz.

Is it a case of writing the code, coming up with a catchy Domain name and hosting it?

Anyone?

 

Yep that's about it, but you didn't mention promoting it, getting started I mean getting even one website to put their listing in an empty 0 PR site is real hard work.
Oh then there's the houskeeping, editing listings put in the wrong place, removing spam listings, adding new categoties etc.
Of course you'll have to promote your directory like any other website or you won't get any vistors.
Then there are a few other issues to think about like if you list rubish sites from bad neighbourhoods it will ruin your ranking.
All for the privilege of owning a free to list directory, if you charge for listing you've got a whole other set of stuff to deal with, refunds, unhappy webmasters, yada yada
One last thing there are roughly ten million squlilion directories allready on the internet, that's a big heap to climb.
My advice would be if you like pointless, frustrating, menial tasks with little or no reward owning a directory is perfect. knock yourself out

site used to have a 'links' page... directories are just a step up.

Yeah, I figured the maintenance and promotion end of it as well.

Are these primarily to generate revenue by selling link and ad space?

I know there are a ton of these out there already, the key is using the tools here at DP to help put your site one step ahead of the rest

With all of the info I am reading my short time here at DP, this is just one of those avenues I am investigating. This site really gets the blood flowing in the brain!
