Starting a hosting company

Well, I'm not starting one yet. Just thinking about it. I mean, I like the idea of recurring income and all that.

However, they are a dime-a-dozen. You'd really need a great USP. Something different to stand out.

Or is it just a numbers game? Get in front of enough eyes, and you'll have customers?

    What do you think?

It's a niche game. Focus on a specific niche. Churches are somewhat underserved right now. So are landscape artists. Chiropractors and dentists have been covered enough! :D And, of course, so has the general market.

So it is no longer an eyeballs game (for paid hosting, anyway) - it is now a niche game. Much easier to play, too. :)

I would agree with you, on the general market you cant compete with the likes of lunarpages, hostgators etc. But a niche market with specialized applications and targeted businesses may still do well.

Stay away, its to hard a business these days to get into and you have small hosting companies run my 14 year olds looking for pocket money and offering unlimited bandwidth etc.

    Not worth the hassle.

It depends, general hosting is something you should stay away from. But specialized hosting for eg Moodle hosting, Lotus Notes hosting etc still have a good niche and profits.

True but finding and marketing to specific target audience can cost $$$ of dollars just to get up and running and get your foot in the door.

If money is no option and your dedicated on growing a well respected company then go for it.

    Regards.

True, but it is an added advantage, skills and capital are needed. These form a natural barrier to entries that would give you much better profit margins than an otherwise general hosting market would ever had given.

I make little money with one hosting company. I'm sure, it's possible to earn more money with that, but I have no enough time to do it.

thats a great idea about churches. most chuch websites that i visit are very poor quality or are hosted by a free hosting company. plus since chuches are non profit you can charge them a little more then you would your other customers. They get to write off everything.

I think it depends if you have a few friends that want hosting get them onboard, that will cover your costs then you are in a position to look for more customers without it costing

Its better you buy a good reseller account, create different sites on top niches and flip them for sale at sitepoint or digitalpoint. All the other ideas are over saturated. Also you can consider promoting some good affiliate programs at CJ, or Regnow..

getting a reseller account is better than having your own hosting company. it takes alot to do this and start up properly.

These days you will see new hosting companies popping up and informing you that they are better than the others. Some are so good that you will shy away when it comes to rates. They can offer you cheaper hosting rates with good features. A small fish will not be able to survive being among the effective ones. I hope you understood my point.

So the answer is to target niche markets. Hmm. Interesting. I hadn't thought of that. Thanks!

Really? That is the KEY to making money on line. 90% of the people who are not making money are chasing after broad, over saturated markets.

Those making money target niche, and micro niche markets.
