Not in the file sharing business, but we get asked this question a lot. You will clearly need huge bandwidth and huge disk space. The CPU and RAM are not going to be nearly as important. As well, a 1gbps connection would be helpful, since there will obviously be many users downloading simultaneously.

Well, I might go with something a little more powerful than an atom...maybe a small quad core or such. But you shouldn't need some monster dual processor machine or anything. The processor is really only going to be used for serving pages, more or less. Once the user actually starts downloading a file, the processor isn't going to be doing much of anything. Your money would be much better spent on bandwidth and massive ammounts of disk space.

Your going to need lots of RAM and CPU, they will in fact be important file sharing scripts are often times heavy and your going to need active scanners to make sure no one is uploading Viruses, trojans... We are currently serving a Filesharing website and they always order Quad or Hexa core Xeon's, don't go with a desktop CPU go with Xeon or Optron because your going to need that extra CPU cache. Stand alone Filesharing is not that popular anymore as it used to be but I would recommend you also offering streaming services like this: http://www.putlocker.com/ I would start off with a small server, set up VM ware and add more servers to your cluster as you grow.

    Best of luck!

You need something pretty Protected by Most DMCA. People will host with you most in that case and there is a Only one company mostly can do that. IWebHostU. You can also go with other Company. But waht will happen pay large bills and end of the month you are the another 20 People visitors Free files hosting site..
SO make you choice now - do what you need. Good Luck :)

I Cant tell you about the bandwith, servers or Space but there is one thing that I would like to tell you. The sole reason for becoming successful in file sharing is to promote your uploaders by giving them incentives whether in cash or some sort of gift and dont fraud with your uploaders. The reason why fileserve and filesonic are very popular nowadays is because their affiliate program is very good and hotfile ranking went down because they were deliberately deleting files and were abstaining to give good price to uploaders.

So, in my opinion your affiliate program should be good to really make a difference in market

If you are in Web Hosting business, you should understand which server you would need. Any hosting sales person would be able to help in selecting a server.

IMO the high end server should be used to start file sharing sites. If you think that it would take atleast a month to get popular then you can consider any other server with a bit low configuration and later upgrade to high end one as the site grows.
