IF you intend to make profits then don't just rely on advertising because your costs are kinda high (dedicated+bandwidth)

so go for a script that has the ability to provide premium packages and probably with paypal support

    think deep

for hosting i think he should have a look at WHT

when i was interested in a project like that i was thinking of LeaseWeb.com

why ? they have stretched bandwidth plans + they don't question your files

Service is good but technical knowledge of Goddady's customer service is very poor.
Common, ask them couple of tricky questions and you will see...

I recently started my own free file hosting company [Easy-Upload.com]. I still have yet to find an effect method of advertising other than posting my link on some directories. I only get 2-3 files uploaded every day but use tons of bandwidth. I'm able to pay off about 50% of server costs currently with the money I'm making from advertising.

    I'm currently running a Intel p4 3.0ghz, 160GB HD, 1GB Ram, 40mbps dedicated unmetered line.

This deal was setup by a friend but for good deals I suggest looking at 49pence.com. They can give you reliable bandwidth for good prices.

I use yabsoft.com for my script.

I think the file hosting business is very hard. If anyone has any advice on advertising it would be much appreciated.

Yea, I might have to agree with that one. Although, at least they bother to respond in a timely manner.

While technical challenge of high b/w and disk space may be overcome with dedicated server, how can one take care of legal issues.

Like if your users upload nude/porno images, isn't it against adsense (and pretty much all ad networks) against TOS. Its kinda putting your account at risk.

I want to know from people who are already running file hosting sites, how do they manage this aspect.

when somebody reports a copyrighted file, simply the admin can delete it

that's what such sites do as rapidshare ;)

What happens when someone from google wants to have a look at your site and bumps into nude/porn picture hosted? that would put adsense account in serious problems.

How would google find out the download link? If the link was that popular and you knew it was illegal you should delete it anyways. So many of these huge file hosters run google ads (sendspace.com), Google would get them before they'd get someone like us.

Not saying it's impossible but if you stay on top of things you shouldn't have a problem with google.

Google (if you are talking about Adsense ) would just care about the site content - things that people see on your pages

they won't care for what's hosted on the server

the hosting company may but not google

simple solution is not to have filenames in urls....

how does youtube handle it?! and its owned by google...

think big, u need servers and alot of them, we for example are already up to a dozen in different countries and datacenters with a custom distributed filesystem in between, now can any of the scripts like the yabsoft one offer that ;) ?

do you have a scalability plan?

do you have long term objectives?

how do you intend to stand out from the crowd, as there are dozen of file hosters and alot dont make it?

have you run any small scale test versions?

security, have you taught of security? letting people upload anything is quite a headache

did you know your breakeven point? figures such as GB/$

can you administer linux servers? or outsource this?

    how to market and advertise?

ask yourself the above questions theres alot more to filehosting than a upload form on a page ;)
