Starting a directory - what u think?

hey all,

i have regd "IWD.mobi". IWD stands for International Web Directory. But i have a question: There are about 10,000,0000xxxx directories on the web. If i start mine will it get some link submissions OR will people buy some featured links on it?

I got this question in mind when i checked the list of directories at Dp.....

You will have to work on getting some incoming links other than from DP.

 

Yes that is true Blogmaster the links will need a wide reach

come join in and setup a directory . Announce it here and promote it good / have it in your sigs ... you need to work good on it to get regular links .

 

My advice charge at least $1 for regular link, or else you will be spammed to death and will not have funds to promote it.
I know you are good with design make a nice unique template.

 

That is so true man.
Even the slightest hint of a payment as low as 100 pennies gets rid of a great deal of hassle with all those garbage sites out there.

 

Some pretty good suggestions. DP is just one market of users, you need to hit more than 1 market to make yourself a success.

If you do as !Ask! suggests and make a unique design then a pay-for-inclusion directory becomes a lot more viable.

The mistake that many people make is in thinking that their free directory is going to all of a sudden become a massive pay-for-inclusion directory when they switch... inevitably it drops off a lot of lists, the traffic dries up as people realise its no longer free, and the owner is left wondering what happened.

 

hmm okie so what will you prefer .. charging 1$ from the start or after sometime after the dir starts getting some submissions .

 

I would charge $1 from day one.

 

What about reciprocals to eliminate the deadbeats and spammers? Or is $1 a better idea? Seems like a buck may be cheap and may hurt "perceived value"??

 

Yes, i have managed 5 directories.

My first 2 i always had it Free then moved to paid which ended up Very unsuccesful.

But the last 3 i had paid from day 1 and worked very well.

 

But whether there will enough regular links for $$$

"perceived value" is much better than allowing "free" listings, reciprocals are a pain in the ass for everyone, the people that have to put then on the site, you have to check it, and in the end people want one-way links.

 

If you require a reciprocal, you should offer some extra features for this. For one of my directories (see signature) I am offering a home page link (rotation) for people setting up a reciprocal. 2 or 3 percent of users set the reciprocal so you get quite a lot of links over time.

 

Ill prefer !$ thingy than the recip ones .

ahh! thanks to all of you for your GREAT replies . The $1 per regular link idea is a tooo much great one . thanks for that. That will avoid people from submiting crap links. I will charge $0 for a link with recopiral.
