Starting A Datacenter/Server Farm

    Hi everyone,

I'm looking to spend $50,000 on my own server company. What I've narrowed the genre down to is something like the regular website host, a storage datacenter, or even a game server provider.

I have searched all over the Internet for more information on starting such an ambitious project, but have found none. I graduated from a Cisco class and know much of the technical and hardware aspects necessary to run such a thing.

My question is, is it viable to get a good start in the business with $50k? Am I right in assuming that the only expenses I need to worry about is commercial office space, servers, T3 connection, and domain name fees?

If anyone has any experience at all in such a thing, I'd gladly like to hear about it.

If you are looking to start a data center type setup or deal with dedicated servers/game servers you might want to look into setting up racks or cages at an already existing datacenter. To build one there will be massive overheads, air, backup generators etc, not to mention initial bandwidth commitments preferably from multiple providers for redundancy and a number of other things. If you just lease space from an existing data center that has all of that in place already you could jump strait into dealing with the servers. With the leased space you will not have to worry about the maintenance of the rest of the building the datacenter will take care of that for you. Just my 2 cents.
