If I were you, I'd just get a free Wordpress.com or blogger.com blog, pick a nice template, and start writing and promoting. If your stuff is interesting, people will want to read it. If your blog starts to become popular, you can always bring it to a domain you own and import the material. If you use Wordpress.com or Blogger.com or another blog host, you don't have to spend money and can just test out the waters, so to speak.
I recommend Wordpress.com since it uses the wordpress software so if you want to move your blog to your own domain, you can import your whole blog, comments and all.

First of all... buy a domain from one of the hosting services out there, and try make sure you can get a keyword or two in there realted to the topic of your blog.

Second, get hosting that has Wordpress. Dont mess around with Blogger - its free but you will pay for it in underperformance. Also, people will see it as less professional. Your host should be able to provide you wordpress for no additional charge - so about $5 a month for hosting, at least to start.

Third, search out your competitors and pay attention to what they are doing. Stalk the best players in the market and pick up tips from the blogs dedicated to helping bloggers.

Fourth, start writing content (priority #1) and keep it coming. You will undoubtedly make mistakes with your SEO/networking in the blogging community, but dont get set back and never take your eyes of the #1 priority. Building your reader base and listening to them as they make suggestions is key.

I think if you have a blog with rich, fresh & unique content that is updated often, you shall be receiving lots of traffic from search engines on many keywords. You will however need many backlinks pointing to your blog to get indexed well in SEs.

    Good luck!

I would spend some cash with a host like Hostgator...for 7 bucks a month you can host unlimited sites.

I have a good host and a site. I really don't have a niche that I work on. I just write stuff about my life and what I come across. Is that good?

Taking cue from experienced members here on DP, i too started blogging 4 months back using blogger.com, it's free and allows one to test this field w/o paying anything.
It helps and i have seen the positive results.:)
