How would I go about starting a blog of my own? Do I have to buy one from someone else or is there a place where I can learn to start one myself. Do I need to have another site host the blog? I'm confused.

As RT said blogger.com will get you started.

If you want to control the complete show you need a domain name and a hosting account that offers free installation of some of the blogging scripts. Wordpress is very easy to learn.

If you're serious about being a blogger, I would get a domain of your own and a hosting account. Many hosts offer automatic installation of popular open source blogging tools like WordPress. If you want, PM me and I'll point you in the right direction.

If you choose blogger, you can add adsense add to it, but at blogme and wordpress.com, there is no way you can add adsense code to it. So choose wisely..

What about a WordPress plugin? Do you have to host it on your own domain to make this work (I've never used a free WordPress blog)?

At wordpress.com and blogme.com we cannot upload any plugin. Template also we cannot modified. So you have to host wordpress into your own domain..
