ok not the usual run webhost off a server i'm renting. i am just venturing here and wondering about having my own server. i have a pc with the same specs at most of these servers. i have all the software needed also. now main problem is obviously is internet connection allowing to host sites/servers. most block port 80. so what company allows this in the eastern part of the us. i have comcast now and yup they block it. i mean why pay 200 a month for hosting for dedicated server when i have a pc with the same specs i can use instead. this way i dont have to pay extra a month for extra storage and bandwidth. bandwitdh being a issue here possibly. just wondering about all this. i want to run a file hosting site and a couple other sites that will have the potential to have lots of bandwidth used. and also sell some webhosting packages to help pay for internet service. so enough ranting just need some opinions and advice. thanks.
Hello, First of all - you shouldn't run a hosting company at your home PC, It's always better if it's in a good datacenter being monitored and you always know that there are techs that can replace your Hardware if it get's damaged or just stops working properly. You should get atleast a low-end Dedicated Server for the begin.
The reason you shouldn't run the service at your home is because your ISP will likely cut you off, as most home ISP doesn't allow you to run servers on their network, two upload speeds are slower for a home ISP then they at a datacenter.
thanks for the input guys. good points u have. well thank you for your input. will buy a dedicated server soon. best place to buy for my needs decently priced and good support? also how long does it take for sites to move to another server. whats the downtime. have a client on my server that cannot go down for a long period of time.
Go the colocation way then. You'll take your box to a datacenter and they'll provide it with power and link to the Internet. It'll be cheaper than renting a dedicated server.
Softlayer.com is the best for that IMHO; they are not too expensive, have very good servers, excellent support and you can *really* host anything there, which is different from most other US hosters (whatever they say).
