I was looking in to starting to sell some custom t-shirts. Do I need to become a business to sell them though another site like Big Cartel.

Anyone know what the average cost to print a shirt at a print should be.

That depends on the local laws. But generally, all you need is a supplier, a shipping agency and a price list. The average cost depends on your suppliers. But generally, you should be getting upto $6-8 profit per T-Shirt.

Yes you need it if you shipped to another country.
The pricing is depend on many factor such as the quantity of order, timing and the quality of the material used.
If you use high grade, then the price can reach $15 each.

the price would depend... upon the raw material you purchase... though bulk printing is less expensive... starting a venture would require a little capital... in purchasing a printing machine.. which could help you reduce the cost of the product :)

I'm looking to get into this as well - I have 3 niche t-shirt ideas with great .com's for them. So far, the options are Zazzle/Cafepress (very small profit margin as they make the bulk of the money) or hiring a printing AND fulfillment center that will ship things out for you. The 2nd idea is the one that makes more sense. I haven't really figured out which service would be the best one, though...it's hard to research on the internet.

Well, you should determine the price yourself. You are familiar with the cost and make sure it'll be profitable. Then
you can start your business. For the first stage,it's important for you to establish your brand. So the profit is not
very important in this period. When you become famous, more will soon come.

Start small--you can always rework things later if orders increase. If you start small with a local printer and do the shipping yourself, you'll make a larger profit while you are waiting for things to take off. Obviously there's Cafepress and Zazzle, but the quality of shirts from those places is not always the best. You don't want to get a reputation for selling cheap wares that need to be replaced often!

Secondly: do the shirts have a tie in to something else: a website or product or...anything that already has fans? If not remember to leave money in your budget for marketing and promotions!
