Hi All, I wish to start my own dedicated hosting server for my file-hosting site. i would like some help with the hardware, software and other requirements needed to do this. any help will be appreciated. Many Thanks. Sandip.
For a file sharing site, the most important thing is obviously going to be storage space. The processor and RAM aren't going to be as important, but with RAM as cheap as it is these days, you could probably get a decent amount anyway.
how much hard disk should be enough...my laptop has 500 gb hdd but available can be say about 400gb...can i use this to make a dedicated server....its a dell inspiron, i5 430m quad core processor, 4gb ddr3 ram....
There's a few problems with that. I'm not 100% sure about your setup, but as far as I know, not many laptops like to be left on 24/7 without overheating problems. Secondly, your home upstream is probably pretty low and not sufficient for hosting large files. Thirdly, it may actually be against your ISP's ToS/AUP to host a website on your home connection. Finally, at home you have none of the benefits of hosting in a data center, I already mentioned the upstream, but things like UPS. What happens if you have a powercut?
my internet connectivity at home is 12Mbps. i can keep the laptop cool with an under-fan and in a room with AC on 24/7. or i can buy a server to with Xeon, say 4gb ram minimum , and 500gb hard disk minimum, internet connectivity as i mentioned 10Mbps and can upgrade to 20 and 40 Mbps. server custom built migh cost say a 1500$ - can do that in my budget. i can buy a working second hand UPS to provide say 30 minutes worktime, if that is necessary. what about the softwares like cpanel, linux etc...
And that's 12Mbps upload? not download? Even if that is the case, filehosting sites generally limit free users to around 1Mbps download, correct? So on your connection you can provide concurrent downloads for 12 free members. I can only assume you intend to make your money by selling premium accounts, one premium account would require your whole connection. If you really want to host this at home I wish you the best of luck, but really you should be looking at a minimum of 100Mbps I would imagine. If not higher.
This is definitely not something you want to do from your house. You will either need to look at co-locating a server, or renting a server. As far as the disk space, no, a single 500GB hard drive is probably not enough, not to mention there is no RAID redundancy on a single hard drive system, in case the hard drive crashes.
the 12Mbps is download, i will limit the free user to say 100kBps so the premium members get more bandwidth n speed. i think your suggestion is better to rent the dedicated server. im looking at some options right now for dedicated hosting now. link and specs are as below. http://www.leaseweb.com/en/dedicated-servers/100-tb-servers/configurator/1877# 100 TB - USA - S Monthly base price € 119,00 United States € 0,00 cPanel/WHM + Fantastico € 22,50 Monitoring - SMS € 19,99 Monitoring - Mail € 9,99 Monthly total € 171,48 do u think this will do, also if you have any idea if leaseweb is good in hosting.
That is a decent price for the server. Leaseweb is a budget provider with mixed reviews. Generally speaking, I think people are fairly satisfied from what I have seen, but as always, you get what you pay for. One thing to keep in mind with Leaseweb (and most providers, frankly) is that if you plan on sharing illegal files, you can forget it. It specifically violates Leaseweb's Acceptable Use Policy, and you will be shut down in very short order. I'm guessing the intent of this file sharing site is not to share legal files.
yup....im not sure what the uploader will put on server, leagal or illegal i have no idea, maximum i can do i monitor DCMA complaints strictly...i wish my site to be for legal file sharing and for things like movies, music, games, softwares, adult content etc... and i guess both legal and illegal files come in these categories. i am really scratching my head now.
The problem with that is that they might let you keep your account with 1 DMCA complaint. After that, your account will most likely be shut down. Providers will not keep fielding dozens, hundreds, or thousands of DMCA complaints, as it requires staff time to do it. They'll just shut you down permanently and call it a day.
i was searching for some ideas i got one. can i host my website on VPS and files on dedicated server in that way the DCMA complaints will come to me directly and not to the hoster?
Having his own complaints avenue could stop this maybe? I think most file hosts have a page to report abuse. Just found RapidShare's - https://www.rapidshare.com/#!help/help_abuse I guess it's something you'd have to discuss with a potential server supplier before purchasing.
It might not be a bad start, but from what I have seen personally, DMCA complaints will often get sent to the person/company, the hosting company, and to the domain registrar. They send them to everyone they can, hoping that someone in the process will do something about it.
