I'm a complete non-techie, but "Creating Cool Web Sites" helped me. At least with HTML.

Blog platforms are great for those of us who know nothing BTW. But I'm learning. I'm hacking CSS at this point! :)

    Hello, ezbzq.
The first thing you must do is to learn HTML and CSS. HTML is the markup language used to write Web pages, and CSS is the specification on how to write style sheets for these pages. These are the elements that a Web developer must know. Web design is another thing, and it is more related to the work of a graphic designer. The design of a website has to do with the overall appearance and structure of the site. If you are more inclined to this kind of work, maybe you can hire a Web developer to implement your ideas. To begin, you may take a look at this:

    yes, I'd also suggest W3Schools,

I used to learn via their website when I just started, I never took a book in my hands for real,
I used sitebuilders, then I learned all the HTML tags, after that I started to use TopStyle for CSS and then ASP.

Now I am a web programmer. I construct the sites by writing each single line of HTML. Many people generate them automatically and then they can't find the errors.

It took me a year of free time (I was working and didn't have much free time) to get to know all of HTML and CSS, and another 6 months for ASP

I wouldn't really recommend books. You learn much more, and faster with a google search.

Glad so many people are suggesting w3schools. It's a great site.
