Do you have a standards based browser? Some websites are best viewed with them. http://vivisimo.com/html/standards Why are we all using the flawed IE browser and the flawed Windows OS. My next box will be a MAC, how about you? Web designers are the first folks on the front lines of Web Standards, or they should be. Dump IE today folks. All webmasters should work for Web Standards and M$ does not support them.
Well, the way I see it is: We have to cater for what the general population use. So if it works in IE, Windows etc then the clients/customers will be happy.
Most webmasters hate IE and they hate designing for IE, so it is up to webmasters to lead the charge on open web standards. You better jump on the Web Standards bandwagon Weirfire
weirfire is right. as webmaster we wouldnt like to target minority users. so far since windows is the most commonly used and IE is already installed on it, ofcoz it is our primary target.
You guys must have a hard time seeing the light when you wake up in the morning Why do you think I am telling you to lead the charge away from IE use?????
In an ideal world everyone would use the best software but it's far from ideal and people buy software which is far more expensive and has far more bugs than the better cheaper software. I do try and cater for the w3c standards and try to design sites which will cater for different browsers but you have to target the larger audience first. Did you know 89% of web sites don't live up to the w3c standards. Considering that there around 8 million people in the UK alone which are registered disabled, I reckon there's a market for conforming to standards which will help these people use the internet more effectively.
If I join on that idea I may lose most of my visitors. We dont have any control on this situation yet, M$ still have the power and control over our visitors.
And they always will if you webmasters do not quit sitting on your hands. Do you want M$ to charge you money to direct their users to your sites down the road That is what will happen if you walk in line with them. Support open source and web standards and quit your cry baby crap.
They said man would never land on the moon also. You guys are both in left field somewhere, take your blinders off so you can see.
By only allowing IE users to browse M$ websites, M$ would be setting up other browsers to come in and take over the market which M$ have already saturated. It wouldn't make sense on their part to do this.
You both miss the entire point, if M$ dominates the OS and Browser business and 90% of the internet visitors use their products to access the internet then you will have to pay them one day to get these users to your sites. You will also have to continue to design your sites for a closed source OS. Do you get it now?
@anthony they already dominate the OS and Browser business. I got your point but my point is, as a webmaster and web marketer my primary focus to make sales. To do this I have to target the large chunk of internet users and designing for IE is a good way to do it. peace.
Would M$ be allowed to do something like that? I'm sure the US Gov would block them trying to make people pay to view sites from IE.
Everyone knows that, but does that mean that you will continue to support closed source M$ flawed OS and Browser? Why not start promoting other options, is that going to kill you? Is it good for the long term future of the business to only support M$ closed source. You and everyone else will pay down the road if webmasters do not lead this movement.
Im already doing that. Im trying to support most of the browsers (if not all) today including firefox and IE ofcoz. Your point is well heard anthony.
Obviously! because they provide a service which people are willing to pay for. I also try and design sites to support other browser types but my first priority is to generate sites which are suitable for the biggest audience.
