Stacking 301's

    I couldn't think of another name for it, but just wanted to get some thoughts on a minor issue I'm having right now.

    I have some old pages that have been 301'd to a new page. The 301's themselves are pretty old, and Google has had no problem following them, and even changing the display URL in their search results.

    I'm currently working on a complete website redesign (static to dynamic), where most of my filepaths and URL's are going to change. Not because I want them to, but because they are so convoluted right now that it makes sense to clean it all up. So, now I'm wondering what to do with all of those old old 301's. For example:

    Old Page -->301 to -->New Old Page-->301 to--New Page

    I'm thinking that it would be completely unnecessary for me to keep the first 301, just because

    A. Google is already indexing the "New Old Page", and
    B. Because I'm not passing any linkjuice.

    Most all of these pages are long tail product pages that have zero backlinks themselves. The only reason why I would keep the first 301 in there is to retain any customers who have bookmarked that very first URL.

    Does this make sense? If not, I blame it on the caffeine. :)
