SSL question

Discussion in 'Security' started by Brian123, Jul 24, 2011.

I am planning to have a site that requires users to log in. My question is, if I have a log in area that is covered by SSL, and once the user has logged in they are transferred to a sub-domain of my site will everything that a user does after that be secure?

I notice sites like hotmail only have SSL on the log in page.

I'm not too sure how SSL works, but I need it to cover the log in section of my site and the sub-domain names that a user will be taken to.

    Thanks

well honestly it depends on the type of SSl Certificate that you get.

If you get a cheapie cert that costs from $7-20 usually they only cover 1 subdomain. Meaning... If you create a certificate and install it only on example.com, then it will usually not work very well (or at all, most times) if you go to subdomain.example.com

However, when you get up to certs that cost $50+ usually they cover an unlimited amount of subdomains, meaning that your entire site would be secure, not just subdomain.example.com

    Your entire site: example.com, subdomain.example.com, sd2.example.com, etc....

All of those would be covered. So... If you are getting a cheapie ssl cert, then you are best off installing whatever portion of the site you want secure, in a subDIRECTORY, meaning example.com/subdirectory (all of that will be covered)

Hope this helps. If you still don't understand it, then i can try to rephrase everything. :)

Like todd said above ... It really matters on what type of SSL you use.

The type of SSL you want is a wildcard ssl.

If you purchase SSL for single domain it will cover all your domain's subdirectory i.e http://yourdomainname.com http://www.yourdomainname.com, http://www.yourdomainname.com/yourfolder1, folder2 and unlimited folders.

But if you want your subdomains subdomain.yourdomain.com then you need to have a seperate ssl certificate with dedicated ip assigned to your subdomain,

You can use a wild card ssl that will cover your whole domain + subdomains with only one dedicated ip, or if you want cheap solution then procted your main site with one ssl and buy another ssl for the subdomain, you will require two dedicated ips one for your main domain and another for the subdomain.
