Why do you require the SSL certificate? IMHO, nobody with even the slightest inkling of a brain is going to enter their CC details into a site protected by a shitty little $15 SSL certificate. For a decent, branded SSL certificate, you'll be looking much more towards the (minimum) $100 mark. Think 'household names' - that's who you want your SSL certificate from, even if it does cost more, the ROI is definitely worth it.

Well, actually for the most parts, a cheap SSL or an expensive one does not really look any difference to the visitors. It will still give you the same level of encryption and you will have the same lock symbol on your web browser.

In the end, it all depends on what you need the SSL certificate for. If it is just to protect online data then the encryption of the cheap one is good enough. If however you are running a bank or collecting hundreds or thousands of dollars products then probably a higher end SSL Certificate would be better.

A Higher end SSL usually comes with a higher level of verification such as requiring you to submit legal documents to proof ownership of the site. The lower end ones simply verify if you have access to the domain name and usually they would do a call back to confirm your phone number is correct.

I did use the RapidSSL for some online registration for some seminars for some IT based companies and they did not report any issues.

GoDaddy is a renown company and has an SSL certificate for $30 for one year. They have three different kinds, that's the cheapest one.

Everyone knows the flaws of GoDaddy's SSL certificates. The massively cheap SSL certificates are renowned for being used by criminals in leeching CC details through web forgery, claiming that the web page is still encrypted for the end user, when really, it doesn't matter.

I'd always go with a reputable company. I personally like GeoTrust, they give you a nice little banner to put on your site also, which shows the live date/time, click it to verify the site is secured, and the registrant details. Great price, too.

Namecheap.com just resells the same Geotrust SSL Certificate and the only difference is that it is cheaper at Namecheap but the certificate registration is done on Geotrust website.
