Hi I am trying to get a godaddyhosting plan but their SSL Certificate is expensive. What is SSL used for? Is it really necessary? If we don't have SSL will our website function as usual?

Are you collecting any personal information on your site? (addresses, phone numbers, CREDIT CARD numbers).

If so, you need an SSL certificate. SSL will create a secure (encrypted) connection between your server and your customer to keep any info that is transferred away from prying eyes. Without it, your site will function fine, but you'll leave your customers open to getting their personal information stolen.

If you go to a RapidSSL reseller you can get an SSL cert for around $15/ year if you decide you need a SSL cert.
