i will be making and selling websites.. host gator person advised me to use a plan with SSL certificate as it keeps data safe when transferring domains..

Is it necessary? is data unsafe without it?

    do you use it?

if it's a simple content site you don't need the SSL... if you are going to set up an online shop you will definitely need one.

Then you dont need to have SSL, paypal provides its own security, and being advised that transferring domains will be safer with an SSL certificate, what is that person on about.

Unless im missing something here it just sounds like someone trying to sell you something that you dont need.

If you have a content website, it's not necessary, but for commercial purpose, online shops, where you use your own payment system, it's necessary to protect the data. Also it's very important in sites where the customers log in their accounts to see information like in the websites of the banks, you can see the https:// in your browser.
