    I just need to get a grip on how ro configure Apache 2.2 to allow SSI (Server Side Includes) . Hope you can give me guidance on this.

    little more than 2 years ago I switched from apache 1.3 to apache 2.2 and had to redo my SSI config. the configuration shown above works for all type of PHP SSI - currently I do insert RSS feeds into HTML pages and text modules into HTML pages as well.
    I do NOT use Shtml extension but only .HTML / .HTM for all SSI !!
    may be that helps you as step further.
    if you do perl SSI you may have to do some more Googling to see if there is any difference in apache config
