SSD VPS or HDD VPS? What is better?

I require your help regarding the choice of reliable host offering vps hosting plans.
Could anyone help me in comparison?
What VPS hosting is better, SSD or HDD? Why?
I need about 50 gbs of space, 1 gb of ram and 1000 gbs of bandwidth.
Thinking to try hostwinds hosting. Do you know anything about them?
What host is better from your points? Why?

SSD is better because it is much faster than HDD (mechanical hard drives). Unless a web host overloads its servers, you will see faster page loads of PHP scripts and anything using multiple database queries.

SSD is pretty standard in hosting today. Any host not using it, at least for shared hosting, is behind the times.

    Hi Billzo,
thanks for your answer. very informative.

I have also noticed that hostwinds uses Litespeed server. Is it really faster than Apache web server?
Where can I read any true customer hosting reviews about their services?

    Thanks.

It's generally recognized that Litespeed is faster than Apache. However, on a shared server you really aren't going to notice any meaningful difference. (I assume you are looking for shared hosting and not VPS or higher.) The main benefit would be to the host because if Litespeed is faster, then the host can have higher customer densities on a server meaning more revenue and profit per server.

A lot of hosts these days are using a nginx front-end to serve static files like images and javascript quickly with an Apache back-end to handle PHP and other dynamically-generated content. Any decent shared host that does not overload its servers will be plenty fast.

As for reviews, I really don't know of any place. You can Google, obviously. I have been with my host for over 9 years now and they are really good so I don't search too much for hosting reviews. :)

SSD is much more faster and nowadays it is not so pricey as it was some time before, so you should definitely use it.

To be honest, SSD or HDD is not going to matter if you are on a low end VPS (1 GB RAM is low) or on any shared hosting plan. SSD has become a hype among customers. With a decent provider, there are other limitations in place to limit your usage and increase server performance in the process.

What you should be looking are (regardless if it is a VPS/shared):

    1. How many CPU cores are available to you?
    2. How much of those cores you are allowed to use up (for example, a decent host would allow 100% of one 1 CPU core on a shared hosting)?
    3. How much IO (disk speed) is available to you?
    4. How much RAM is available to you.

Due to these factors, more often than not, a decent shared hosting can outperform a low end VPS/cloud in terms of performance. Don't fall for the hype.

SSD is much better than HDD. SSD has more storage space, fast speed, small size and they don't have moving parts so they don't disturb. SO, we can say in every aspect SSD is the winner one.

No doubt, ssd vps will be much faster than HDD ones.. but still recommend you to read customer hosting reviews before dealing with this or that web host.

Actually, if your server has enough RAM, it won't matter as your files will be cached in memory.
Remember that RAM (memory) is 1000s of times faster than SSD and 10,000s of times faster than HDD.

I'd rather have a VPS with more memory and HDD, than less memory and SSD.

If really depends on what you are serving. If your most popular files will not fit in memory, and your Network Card can handle it only then will SSD give you a real boost.

SSD is always better in terms of efficiency and performance but again, is the price worth the performance that you are looking for? there are chances that your work can be done with an HDD as well just give it a shot, you might save a few bucks. but if paying a tiny tad bit extra for SSD is not a big deal for you then go for ssd

SSD is much better compared to HDD in every aspects like performance, capacity ,access time ,durability and more.Even though SSD is more expensive compared to HDD but it gives better overall performance.

A solid state drive or SSD is more preferred than HDD because SSD can speed up the performance of a computer significantly, often more than what a faster processor (CPU) can.SSD's reliability is higher because SSD disks do not have moving parts hence results in reducing of the risk of mechanical failure.

As most have mentioned, SSD is of course going to be better than a HDD in all categories other than limited capacties which are only getting better each year with new models. However, I think the question should be: what is the best ssd drives?
