Why doesn't google relax and let us put sponsors next to our ads?

I don't suppose they'd have too much of a problem with it actually (in my opinion - I don't speak for AdSense). They do mention 'Sponsored Links' and 'Advertisements' as being safe labels. I think a concern might be that the label 'sponsors' implies that those advertisers are helping your site, so maybe people should visit the links to help them in return. A tenuous possibility.

I didn't say that. I said in my opinion it would probably be okay - but I don't speak for Google. It's one of these grey areas. If you want a definitive answer you need to ask them directly.

I would think that "sponsors" and "sponsored ads" mean the same thing... meaning those links help to finance the operation of the website. "Sponsors" better be a usable term... as I have been busy replacing all those "Articles" and "Support Us" titles on these websites I have been buying the last few months to comply with the rulez ;)
