splitting traffic between ecommerce and content site

I am thinking about putting up one super ecommerce site on a new domain name, but i currently have an existing niche content site with pr3.

What do you think is best to do? The ecommerce site will include the same keywords as the niche site, but the niche site has the potential to generate some very good traffic (though not necessarily convert even if I supply links to the new main site). I know that in the short term it will help the ecommerce site (will be a brand new domain), but I am afraid it will harm me long term.

From an SEO perspective, will it damage me to have both sites? Should I just forget about the niche content site and just focus on optimizing the main site because of the overlap?

Or is it okay to have a total content based community site and an ecommerce site, and If I split them, what's the best way to optimize?

    Hey

I kinda had the same thing. A site that was all about eco farming, and a store that sold eco products. The store was on a subdomain, and it worked great, I believe. Maybe this is a way to go
