Splitting Long Articles into multiple posts

I have a site with some articles that are quite long and they perform very well in the search engines. I am considering splitting the pages up so that there are more pages of content and so that the content on a page is more targeted to a particular long tail keyword.

However, I don't want to do anything that might hurt the original long page. For example if I split 1 page into 3 pages, I would expect the original page to receive a bit less traffic because some of the text will be gone, but I would hope that the 3 pages combined would have more traffic in total than the original longer page.

Does anyone have any experience with doing this? I am not interested on a discussion about whether short pages are better than long, I'm looking for people who have broken apart an existing page that was doing quite well and what the results were.
