    Agreed.

Use of keywords in image and other filenames helps ranking.

This is the same discussion as with the IMG ALT TAG. They are very important for the same purpose. Anyway, I agree with you.

As with the alt="" value, image names should be readable and relevant to the file. Don't take it as a chance to game the search engines (it may help, but does the name you're giving the image or the text you're putting into the alt attribute really help anybody?) but instead take it as an opportunity to add value to the user (and in the case of the image filenames, the person maintaining the Web site).

I agree that having your image named after a keyword or keyphrase is a small effect, overall that small effect used throughout the website can be the boost you needed to climb above your competition.

Its benefits lie far more with usability and accessibility (not to mention maintenance for the Webmaster - and remember, a Webmaster by definition is the person in charge of maintaining the Web site) than search engine optimization (though it does help, especially when dealing with image searches).

But should be done only if the keyword is actually identifying what the image is (remember, alt="" is to provide alternative information about the image, not to game the search engines).

For example, if you have an ecommerce site dedicated to selling flowers, and one of the images is of a carnation, you'd use the alt attribute to state that the image is of a carnation (in this case you'd be able to add a keyword or two by specifiying what kind of carnation it is, such as a "white carnation" or "pink carnation" for example).

Remember, put your users first, and the search engines will follow. :)
