    Computer Virus Infections

Computer virus infections work quietly although one of the first clues that a computer may be infected is that the computer works much slower than when it was new. Many times, when a person does a virus check on their computer for the first time, that person is surprised to find that more than one computer virus is infecting their computer.

It’s true that computer viruses are complicated now. However, they did not start out this way. Computer viruses had very humble beginnings. The first computer virus began in July of 1982. A student named Rich Skrenta created it. Rich Skrenta was a mere Pittsburgh high school student, but at the age of 15, he put out the first computer virus. That virus went by the name of Elk Cloner.

Elk Cloner used floppy disks to cause damage to and infect Apple II computers. Elk Cloner was not the malicious, security breaching computer virus of today. In comparison, it was very timid. Elk Cloner did not cause popups to envelop your computer screen. It did not switch your homepage or slow down your computer. Elk Cloner was just a prank.

Before developing the first computer virus, Skrenta had a reputation for handing out pirated computer games to his companions. Skrenta would change the games so that after the games were played a few times, they would stop working. When Skrenta came up with Elk Cloner, he discovered a way to really annoy his friends without having to even touch their computer disks.

When an Apple II was infected with the virus, a poem that contained the lines, “ It will stick to you like glue. It will modify your ram too. Send in the Cloner!” came on the screen. Wikepedia describes the first computer virus as an “annoyance,” but today no one is laughing.......
