I have long known about the history of the spartans way before 300 came out. Did you know that army bootcamp came from the spartans.
Imagine 300 men standing up to persians finest army.
    Those guys had guts.

I wouldnt be so afraid, it was tens of thousands of other greeks next to them. I prefer the Athenians. They where democratic, well organized and greater.

No it wasnt tens of thousands . It was 1000 greeks at most and they were betrayed when the greeks that were supposed to be guarding their rear left them to die.Remember the spartans also conquered the athenians after if u read ur history:)

Still say they were the greatest warriors of all time hands down. No one had been able to slaughter the 10,000 persian immortals brigade that xerxes had on his side but the spartans crushed them

    300 men? My ass!

Where did you get that number from?

    <edit>

nevermind, I realize there's a movie about this. They just left out the other 1,000 or so men I guess.

Besides, these men were the greatest WARRIORS ever:

Rob i said 1000 lol. Samantha no they lost but it really was a victory because they delayed the persian invasion and inflicted alot of damage before they went down. If it werent for the betrayal they might have won. Anyways the greek navy fleet crushed the persian fleet at the battle of salamis, who out numbered them 7 or 8 to 1. The greek victories were all great upsets and were won by military intellect over greater forces

Does it matter if there were 300 or 1300? They were vastly still outnumbered. Can u imagine a 250,000 man army coming at you. I dont know about u guys but i would have ran to the hills lol

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Thermopylae

. After three days of battle, a local resident named Ephialtes betrayed the Greeks by revealing a mountain path that led behind the Greek lines. Dismissing the rest of the army, King Leonidas stayed behind with 300 Spartans and 700 Thespian volunteers.

The Persian army first encountered a joint force of 10,000 Athenian and Spartan hoplites led by Euanetus and Themistocles in the vale of Tempe. Upon hearing this, Xerxes sent the army through the Sarantaporo strait, which was unguarded, and sidestepped them. The hoplites, warned by Alexander I of Macedon, vacated the pass.[6] The allied Greeks judged that the next strategic choke point where the Persian army could be stopped was Thermopylae.[7]

I still say Athens are the greatest, Athens still remains, Sparta is gone. Even today Athens has the same city core, sparta is under dust.

And ps, dont belive greek historians, they talked about gods and monsters next to their national history, there is definetly some lies.

Spartans are good army but not greatest. Any generals knows when you try squeeze large army into a funnel, squeeze point is the weakest point of the enemy. They just knew how to use the terrain, since its their home land. Greatest army is Carthaginians, outnumbered under Hannibal, destroying Romans on a foreign land. Sparta is a militaristic society, you serve the army form cradle to grave. Carthage is commerce nation. Roman put salt on it and told them move from Carthage to desert.

Study your history buddy:), not all north africans are arabs. Carthaginians were phoenicians. The story here is that queen dido from the phoenican city-state of tyre married a greek prince and moved many of her people with her to north african and named that town carthage. This was many centuries before the invasion of mohammads armies. The carthaginians worhsipped dieties like baal the sun god etc etc. After the 3rd punic war in which carthage is destroyed many carthaginians fled carthage. One rumor is that the mulungeon indian tribe from tennessee were part of that carthaginian group that fled.

You guys have to look at some pics of mulungeons, i swear they look lebanese lol.

Why stop there? Where did Phoenicians came from, who are their ancestors?
Then again, I wouldn't give all the credits to Carthaginians army, Hannibal army is multi racial, multi cultural WAR MACHINE.
