Maybe your host could setup some better mod_sec rules to block them?

What forum software are you using? If you are using vBulletin the thing that worked for me was this mod:

    http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=183917

The mod checks the time it takes for users to register. Bots will usually instantly register, and using your time setting, you can prevent these registrations. I have mine set for 15 seconds, and it has stopped ALL spam bot registrations.

You should get emails when bots are denied registration because of the mod. I get at least 10 emails a day for denied bot registrations. It works like a charm! I have taken down all my other security measures, including post image verification, email verification, etc, because this works so good.

Well, I don't remember where I've put the email field, because I don't receive any emails yet, can you tell me where to change, is it the AdminCP>Vbulletin Options>General Settings>Webmaster email< is it this email?

Yes that is the email. Make sure that your email is working properly, or no one using the forums will recieve emails. To test your email go to AdminCP >> Maintenance >> Diagnostics

I love the Is Bot: Registration time check mod. It definitely stopped all my spam. But every once in a while a spambot would slip through the cracks, just barely. That's when I installed NoSpam!
I didn't think I'd need it because vbulletin 3.8 comes with a random questions/answers option, but it turns out that vbulletin's built-in random questions/answers option sometimes lets bots in. NoSpam! doesn't let them slip through, and you can use html in your questions!

With NoSpam! and the Is Bot time check mod running along side each other, you are 100% protected from bot registrations. I sure am!

Here's another plus - You don't need to use captcha when you use the above mods. That means people that are registering don't have to figure out some code that's sometimes hard to see and they walk away and you lose what could have been a very good contributing member.
