I was seraching Google today, and saw this strange article, anyone seen it? Thing is that it's been 2 years since this article was put online in January of 2004, and I still get spam.

Spam will never be gone. It is here to stay. Learn how to do deal with it. People will always resort to spamming so long as they can make some money from it.

For anyone says that it will take 2 years to do something obviously has no idea on how to fix it or to know if its possible to fix it.

Mmm... my inbox's spam has decreased over the years, just use some good spam keywords in your filters, as you should rarely be getting any non-spam with the same keywords ;)

I just love it when people (original poster) only quote what they want so that the entire story will be miscontrued.

So although he says it would be gone, he also gives mention that he's not always correct.

Spam is here to stay. Why? It's lucrative! Just good keywords in spam filters can reduce it. I realize some spam software currently on the market does eliminate spam but they also prevent good emails from coming through. What a dilemma....

Can you legislate against anything on the internet?

Where is the internet? Who controls it? What physical agency moves in the right planes of existence to control the content?

Well: The internet is a series of computers, all of which have a virtual identity and address controlled by a computer run by a company / individual; all of which are tied together across many wires and acrosss many miles. These little virtual spiders webs are situated in almost every country in the world; some of which do not share the same laws as the UK (and by inference its client states: US, Australia etc) In many places where internet connection is possible, public beatings, child marriage and the hunting of protected species are ongoing crimes.

Are we so afraid of "Get V14gr4 Cheap now" or "Debby Wants Your Hard Cash " that we would compare these two facts? Mr Gates is a computer geek of the highest order and, like a computer geek, he will always want to push the envelope of 'what is possible'. Norton and their competitors like Black Spider will make their money out of spam protection... I really think that my tax dollars could be better spent...
Perhaps reducing the impact that the US has on the environment.
Protecting the whale / shark / tiger from the mandibles of the Japanese / Chinese.
Cutting down on the number of weapons sold to stupid Guvornments by stupid Guvornments.

spam filters have definitely improved, but it will always be there. I still get junk mail via the USPS. Why would the internet be different?

    1. People will eventually figure out how to make smarter bots, just like CAPTCHA solvers. It's a challenge for the programmer.

    2. People will eventually figure out how to make more efficient puzzle solvers, or using more powerful computers, or use distributed computing methods. Just like DEScrackers, prime number thingies, protein folding thingies, rainbow table cracking thingies ...

I think (quote that word in your reply if i am wrong) the problem here is that "spam" (mass mailing) is legal if you use your real name.

Quote the word think, i might be wrong. Recently new law in US says you are allowed to flame people if you use your real name, and not your alias.
