Hi...I setup a proxy a couple weeks ago on a dedicated server and I got a message from my hosting company today saying they got a compaint from spamcop about some messages sent from my IP... Has this happened to anyone before?? Is there a way to stop this at all ?? any help is greatly appreciated
Check your records. A spammer probably used a lot of bandwidth so check for that first. If you can figure out who it was from their searching records then ban their IP. That's really the main thing that you can do.
thx i'll check into that....is this a common problem with proxy site owners do you know ?? I've never read about anyone else having issues like this and i don't think my host will take anymore complaints so not sure if I want to put the proxy script back up
I'm not personally a proxy owner, but I have heard of them have a problem with scammers on ebay. It is a little weird for them to go through a proxy just to spam though. Were they hitting forums or emails?
ya i realize some may use it to try & scam and maybe send a few anon emails but i was really surprized to see somebody used it for spamming... they must have only been able to send out a few emails its not like they could have run a mailer via my proxy..would have been pointless, thing is it was the Nigerian Bank Account Spam to email addys cuz i got the complaint via my Hosting company from SpamCop...I figured they'd have better resources for spamming, very strange my bandwidth didn't even see a big spike...not sure how to check the logs for how much bandwidth each IP uses tho...anyways i commented the php script out for now until i can figure this crap out
This has nothing to do with the proxy. Your mail server has open relay. You should fix that because you can get blacklisted for that and all your mails wont pass other's people ISPs
Run your domain name at http://www.dnsreport.com and see if there is any reported open relay. If you do have, it will tell you. Open relay does not involved using port 25 per se but rather that the mail server does not have authentication and allows anyone to use it.
And check your server ip against http://senderbase.org as well. Usually it can come up with more info.
