Spam & Instant Messengers

I used to put my IM information on forums such as DP and then after a while I'd log in and get a bunch of spammers (especially in yahoo) who I think were from DP. Some were just people from India who claimed they wanted someone to talk to (for no reason) but after a while, I'd log in and get like 30 messages or so with random links. I've since disabled this on the forums I visit, but I was wondering if this has happened to any of you. Yahoo seems to be the worst messenger spam-wise. I was wondering if there is a way to make it so only people on my friends list can contact me because somehow I must have gotten on some sort of spammer's list.

Anyway, have any of you gotten a lot of spam on Yahoo messenger or any others.?

Yeah, you can make it so only your buddy list on here can see it, go to http://forums.digitalpoint.com/profile.php?do=editprofile, then scroll down and under where you fill in your IM info, it says
"If you would only like users on your buddy list to see your instant messaging identities use this option. If you want any member to be able to contact you via IM, do not check this." .... You need to check that box :)

As for yahoo spam, I never used yahoo because noone I know uses it, but I do get some weird IM's on aim or msn sometime, but if they get very strange I block or ignore them!

Well in Yahoo my suggestion to you is to not accept IMs from people you don't know. Generally if someone sends an IM on Yahoo to me I have to allow for it if they are not on my friends list. However I took somebody off my friends list and they IM and it got through and then all you have to do then is block them. Best thing to do is just block them.

See, I don't have the opportunity... They just get spammed though. I did a google search for my username and the only place it comes up is in Yahoo forums, it's listed as my messenger username, it's just the same as my yahoo one.

Is there a menu item that I can enable/disable so that only my friends can IM me?

I had my MSN in my profile once and forgot about it.

I was getting like 5 adds per day with random newbs asking if I want Directory Submissions and etc.

Funny thing is some people couldn't even speak English, and were offering Article Writing services.

Yeah, that is really my only problem with DP and why I would request an example of past work before paying someone for great forum posts or article writing. I feel bad for people who are trying to get a forum set up and have a bunch of Engrish posts written, while these users try to squeeze them for their "rightful" payment.
