Did you activate Aksimet plugin - it`s pretty awesome with the spam.
Spammers are using services like Decaptcha, DeadCaptcha etc. and easy pass through Recaptcha.

Captcha doesn't work now a days. As mentioned earlier there are lots of ways to bypass. I had the same problem. Auto comments and fake trackbacks. I use WP-Ban where I put in the IP address and job done. Works better than Akismet or Recaptcha put together.

I used Aksimet before it only catch spam comments not stop spam comments from posting. Every time i have to delete spam comments.Banning IP is good but spammers will simply change ip and there is lot of things for that. These are the reason i used recaptcha but its not working either.

Try out Akismet first, it does a relatively good job. Hard to stop all the spam though.

I use Akismet and a plugin called GASP. You will never eliminate spam completely I'm afraid but using those 2 plugins I only get a couple a day now.

GASP adds a tick box that must be ticked by the comment author or they can't leave a comment. :)

Before, I felt the same like you.
However, instead of thinking one thousand ways to get rid of the spams, I changed my strategy.
I used export email and welcome them by emailing my promo ads or invite them to visit my other site.
He..he..I think kinda pissed them off the ground.

Activate Akismet so that atleast you don't get email of every spam comment and don't have them in pending approval list

    I have the same issue.
I use NoSpamNX plugin for last year (it's javascript-based test), but 2 week ago some spammers had learned to pass this test. Do you now another javascript-based anti-spam plugin?

I am pretty sure Akismet will detect 99% of all spam comments.

Akismet is foreign service, isn't it? And you can't control it. I don't like that. Problem must be solved in my server.

Akismet is the only solution to get rid of spam, i tried almost everything but few spams were always there. Now i only use akismet and that works Great Simply.

Try disabling trackbacks and there is a free plugin called "Spam Stopper" which asks the user to answer a question.

Most of the time, akismet is doing its job. You just need to activate it.

Otherwise, I'm EXTREMELY satisfied with the Antispam Bee plugin. Close to zero false positives, close to spam comments passing through per month (not per day, per month !).

I recommend Antispam Bee to anyone fed up with spam :)

I agree with you, this is by far the best set up to stop spam.
