Hi: I'm looking for sources, stats, studies that indicate that a professionally written anything (headline, sales letter, webpage, etc.) performs better than others. I have stats from my own employers/clients/career but I want to use an objective "source." I've been to the DMA, the AMA, the IABC and I get nothing. Anyone out there able to point me in the right direction? Many thanks, ~Rojac
Every one of your clients (and every business that's done copy testing) is an objective source. Most of the statistics are compiled by individual companies or professionals and they involve private business information -- there probably isn't going to be much released publicly. I would say your best bet is to talk to clients or other companies you're not affiliated with and see if they'll share some case studies with you on copywriting conversions. Out of curiosity, what do you need the stats for? The purpose might influence the kinds of stats you should look for, so that info might help others in coming up with ideas.
Rojac, there is absolutely no way to determine this. Some respond to lame headlines, some repsond equally to professionally written ones. And there are just so many variables. You could have some guy who says that a piece of professionally written copy is better, and he has proven it with tests, but what if a guy out there who has no experience can come up with a better line off the top of his head??? There is no way to tell, either way. Just curious, but why are you asking this?
To me, it seems rather obvious that good professionally written copy will perform better. Obvious enough that proof isn't necessary. A professional dancer will almost always dance better than some random guy who has some dancing experience and instruction. Same for a professional copywriter and copy. Of course, some people may not believe anything unless some scientific study or survey has been performed to confirm an obvious fact.
seriously if you do AC you can see the clicks really surge over seo pptimized and great writing. Ac puts your content on the front page too, getting 6-8,000 page views can be a real charge when you worked hard on something.
