I am looking for a source of images (willing to buy or legally obtained if free) of images like the ones beside stories on http://slashdot.org/ . Let me know if you know of a good site or disc based set. Thanks.
Sounds like the sort of thing you could get out of any decent clip art collection. I've gotten a lot of mileage out of the "Art Explosion 800,000" box that I received as a gift two years ago, and there are a bunch of collections of that sort that hover around the $30-60 price range. I don't have any artistic ability, but I can get a lot done if I have a basic idea to work from and an old copy of Photoshop and Illustrator (I'm still working with Illustrator 10 and Photoshop 6 - they do everything I need and they're paid for).
I would get a clip art program from best buy/circuit city/etc... I'm actually going to pick one up tonight now that I think about it! (along with borat )
Icon can come in small (16x16) to large (256x256), so you can use them as images.... Leo's Icon Archive has a lot of different, well rendered icons for personal use. Read the license agreement carefully if you do choose to use any. http://www.iconarchive.com/
I bought the big art collection (something like that) at bestbuy last night and it is a great collection!
