so I visited a website today & it showed the full PHP source code of the website & the config.php contents with the user's MySQL password.

this isn't illegal right? I'm not trying to hack the person & I even sent them an email saying their website's source code is viewable.

I'm not really scared about running into legal issues because it wasn't my fault their source was open, but I was just curious if anything like this happens to me.

Well it's a security issue for the web site owner, but not illegal.

I would advise you to try to contact the website owner and inform them that their coding is showing. I am sure if this happened to one of us, we would appreciate a heads up also!

Exactly... Sure you didn't make anything illegal by checking the source code. I think it's still legal to do that on any web page :)

Seriously, you don't have to report yourself but a warning to the webmaster would be nice.
