As I say sorry if it is a stupid question but I am new to all this. I am guessing a backlink is just a link on another site that links back to your article or whatever? But what is nofollow and dofollow all about?

A backlink is just a link to your site, simple as.

nofollow is a tag that is attached to the link simply telling google not to give any credit for this link.
gofollow means you will recieve credit for this link providing other criteria are met of course.

so when you say that google will not give any credit does that mean that when it is indexing and moving stuff to the top of it's search if it has more links to it, it doesn't count that link?

You should have posted this thread in the link development section of the forum.

Nofollow links are counted by the search engines, not you will rank your website better in the major search engines by building nofollow links to your site.
