I hired them to complete a project and both of us signed a contract and emailed the copy to each other.

What can I do if they screw me over?

They're two weeks past the dateline and the owner Rob haven't been replying to any of my emails or IM message even though he constantly changed his status/PM. (which means that he has been ignoring me).

I've already paid them a lot of money, what can I do to lean this towards my advantage?

He still hasn't been in touch with me, should I send the contract to a lawsuit?

You could try starting a dispute in paypal or a chargeback via CC if it was through another payment system. If they dispute then you may have to seek professional legal advice, what sort of sum are we looking at? Anything less than mid $xxx and it probably isnt worth it, just take it as a lesson learned.

$900 was the amount, he still gives excuses for job that was supposed to be done 4 weeks ago (email not working, doesn't check his email often etc which were full of it!). Another member of this forum also PM'ed me saying that he has been scammed by SophMedia in the past but another guy told me that SophMedia has pretty much done a good job. He just seems so lazy I don't think he's going to get the project done.

    Hello,
    sorry for that.

I hope, if you contract a laywer for 900, you will lose money. As I know paypal dispute is only for products not for services, but you can contact paypal support team to ask about your problem.

Try talking to him, if he doesn't respond, but that in your cc chargeback and/or paypal chargeback.

Show your contract to a lawyer, tell him what happened, etc.

Usually they'll quote you for how much they'd charge to do this case. The quotes are usually free.

Thanks a lot for the advice guys, I'm working with Rob from SophMedia to resolve the case. Can't really deal with anymore excuses of his.

He's giving me an ultimatum that he wants this thread removed or he won't go forward on the project despite the 1 month waiting time, and 5 days for a single email. On top of that, the money paid for jobs that didn't even get resolved properly.

Thanks for the info. bobchrist, I wish I had seen that prior before hiring him, he's a well spoken person and he knows how to dodge people.

Will reporting to the BBB and FBI Internet Crime department helps at all, at least so that other people won't be scammed?

I'm filed a dispute through my credit card and am waiting for all the paperwork to be mailed to me.

It's clear now that Robert Norton is a well-known scammer, he also owns all the sites in his portfolio.

I just hope that karma will get him fast. STDs and lifetime unemployment sound about right.

Well, I won't ever be doing business with him. Sounds a bit dodgy to me.
