Not at the moment, but from recent screenshots of the Wii (which is my first choice), I might start thinking about it. I had a PS2, and apart from Kingdom Hearts my experience wasn't great.
I'm giving up on consoles - for now. At least one of my mates will get one, so I'll just play it at his place
I was really leaning towards the Wii, but this is a big price cut. I'll wait till Christmas and see what games are out. If Konami release Winning Eleven (PES) for the PS3 then I'm definitely getting one.
That's good news regarding the price cut. I thought the original price for the premium one was 599 but $515 is even better. I wonder when we will know how many units each best buy will get. It would be interesting to have a site that displays this. I remember they had one for the PS2.
You guys do know the price cut is only for Japan, correct? The price stays the same for the US: http://www.nintendorevolution.ca/09212006/23/wii_are_shocked_playstation_3_gets_price_cut
Someone (not me) is gonna make a killing on eBay. Only 500K worldwide at launch. You can easily fetch $1500 with a game or two thrown in.
The price cut isn't for the US. I wonder if this will effect my profit margins for the 25 i'm getting and selling on eBay.
I really don't understand the point of reducing the price. It is going to sell out of the initial shipment no matter what. Anyone who cares about price is waiting anyway.
Exactly. Although a lot of people may end up waiting so long that they end up buying something else instead, and forget all about this console. I believe this price point may be a mistake on Sony's part. It's still substantially more than the other consoles, price cut or not, but console technology is at a point now that the extra functionality is not going to make such a huge difference for the user. I mean, how good does it need to be?
The starting price is ridiculous to begin with even $415 isn't worth it. I'd say $300 by the time it is in stock, no more.
You might be right but of a hundred students in my school (kids and adults), not one of them is planning to get a PS3. A couple are interested in the Wii, but most are content with their Nintendo DS. Don't underestimate the impact the DS has had on Japan. It's STILL sold out in many shops, yet it feels like everybody has got one. It's portable, cheap, and has the best games (for Japanese).
The DS has been the best selling gaming console worldwide for about 6 months, so it's pretty popular everywhere. I have one myself, and I love. The PS3 has a hard road ahead of it, and if they don't win the Japanense market then it will go to the Wii. The XBOX 360 has completely failed in Japan, and I don't think the recent XBOX 360 price cuts there will help much. There's a reason why Japan & the US are getting the PS3 first, and that's because they're the two most important gaming markets today. In order to truely be a success, you must capture both markets.
In Japan the consumers have a lot of power over Sony. If they feel the price is too high they will all snatch up a Wii instead of a PS3. Sony's company is shaky with all the money they put in the PS3 and if it fails in their main market it would be horrible for their company so they are doing whatever it takes to beat their unplanned rival for this year, Nintendo.
