Hi I have been doing a few experiments on a new site I have. I use to follow the old rules: 1) Put a banner above the fold 2) Fill all your space with ads 3) Use a leaderboard etc.. Anyway after a bit of testing I have found this: Use 1 ad a 336 x 280 about centre at the bottom of your content, this seems to give the best results with both a high CTR and high earning per click. I usually but the 336 ad next to a newsletter sign-up form, this gives the user a choice of clicking an ad or signing up to the newsletter, so its a win-win. I'm not saying that every user clicks on a ad or signs up for the news letter, but the CTR is about 4% plus I get a few sign ups every day to the newsletter, this is only with about 300 page impressions. People are becoming more and more sensitive to ads, remember give them something first namely interesting content Anyway it's always worth trying new tactics, I suggest if you have a low ctr and your site is full of ads maybe cut back a bit, sometimes less = more
It's a whole lot different than my way, but it shows the value of experimenting. Most people probably go through a lot of different placements before coming upon the best one. What works for you, may not work for others, but giving more examples and explanations always helps for a starting point. Stephen C
another most important point in getting good click rate is the location of the click and niche of the website ...
The highest bidder get the spot on the ads you put up, so putting lesser ads at a high CTR location = more money generally.
Very important facts. Putting too many ads up could potentially dilute the value of each click. Less in many instances is more... if you have experimented enough to ensure that you get good click through rates. It is a very risky strategy, if your click through rate is poor in the first place because in the end you'll be giving your visitor less choice of ads to click on. The more choice they have the more they're likely to see an ad that they like. I haven't got enough time to properly experiment with all my sites (because each site is unique you never know which configuration works best with each one). But I often place a 336 x 280 ad somewhere between my content. So that its not too obstrusive but prominent enough to be noticed. It normally gives me good CTRs. Anyway good tips.
Personally I tried with fewer ads, but always found that the earnings at the end of the day were less also. But it's been a while last time I made the test!
Now adays tactic is the only way to earn money from adsense. Confuse your visitor about the Ads, so that they can click on it. Don't let them know that this is the Ad other wise they will not click on the ads.
