I just looked at googles's cache for a page...and it was the homepage of the site---not the page I was expecting it to be. I exchanged links with these people 2 or 3 days ago...I am correct in thinking that I need to end this exchange?
Uh... maybe. Put us all out of our suspense and give the url. Without it it is like water divining and I don´t have a big forked stick.
Well, it is a pr6 directory page... Looks to me like their links are direct, though I admit I am no expert there. I don´t understand your problem. I´m sure I am missing something that I need to learn here and am all ears waiting for some clarification.
I just checked the PR of that page and although the toolbar displays a PR6 - several PR checker sites return a PR0 for that URL.
My issue is that when I look at the cache of the page that my link is on... It seems that google either does not have a have of it...or that when i try to look at the cache it shows what the cache should be for the home page... The other categories seem to be doing the same...but msn and yahoo have the correct info... Out of my pay grade now...
great tool... horrible results... I guess that, um...is that. Thank you very much for everybody looking into this. Wonderful way to end the week.... Looks like it was fools gold afterall.
Hi All, Source-it.org is a site we run. I assure you we are not intentionally trying to prevent PR drain. This is the first time we've been made aware of the problem, so we are working to understand and correct the issue. I'll keep you all in the loop re our progress. Thanks for your understanding! Jeff
Hi ROAR and hi everyone else, Quick intro: I'm Matthew and I work for the company behind source-it.org. I've asked Jeff, who posted above me, for the go-ahead to represent us on this issue here. If you need confirmation that I'm legit, ROAR, I can provide you with the email you used to submit this link? First, let's get one thing out of the way: we're not hogging any PR, we're not doing anything tricky - but we are interested in getting this fixed. The problem described seems to have appeared in the last 7 days. Look at this cached page from August 1 @ http://tinyurl.com/bqzcf. Nothing the matter. Yet the cached paged from August 7 show the home page. As the developer of the site I'm thoroughly familiar with the code; nothing to check there, we're on the up-and-up. Server-side I don't see any problem either. Spider simulator also shows no problem. At this time my impression is that this is a Google problem. And I think the problem is with the results returned for cache only. Why do I think that? Well, look at the 2nd result for this search @ http://tinyurl.com/7lc82, using text unique to the problem page. See, the snippet there is accurate. It is that very page. Better yet… now click on the CACHE link… See that? That is the cached page of AUGUST 1 !! Without your link on it yet…. Go to the page, hit the cache button on your Googlebar … and now all of a sudden you get a cached page from AUGUST 7 !! I hope this helps a little bit? As for the results of that PR tool… Try it with any other URL that has /index.php/whatever in it? I suspect all of them will show the same problem. Google does however see these as individual pages, as you can see yourself from the different PR on different pages. I'll be monitoring this thread and will be available for comments etc.
Welcome to DP Jeff and Matthew. I don't think this was a bashing thread and I sincerely hope you don't either. The DP knowledge base will always try to get to the bottom line quickly. That's what's been accomplished here, please don't take offence, I don't feel it was anything personal, IMO. I am in the same situation. I have approx 30 PR 6 pages that are 'artificial' PR. In my case I stumbled across it accidently while employing a redirect. OMG, I say how did this happen?? I quickly figured out how. The difference being I don't sell links. I get the feeling that you are sincere in your concern otherwise you would not have faced this thread head on . However you can't fix it, only Google can. My bet is next update you will see appropriately alocated PR. My conclusion as well. But those that are exploiting and profiting from it (not saying you are) are clearly on the wrong side of town. Let's all live and learn! Again welcome to DP! Cheers
I am interested to see if they post back with updates, etc... If they are good at what they do, they will probably want to join in more threads here.
Hi Matt and Jeff... Thanks for posting...I appreciate it. As I said before, I just found this confusing and I hope you did not take any offense as Homer mentioned earlier. Tom
Hi All, No offence taken. We, like you, were surprised to hear about this anomoly, and just wanted to let you all know that we were committed to getting to the bottom of it. We find it intriguing that with some of our other directories using the same software, are not experiencing the same anomolies, albeit they are slightly different versions of the software. Homer, where in Canada are you? I do also agree we'll have to see how it works itself out. I think it unlikely it will retain the PR6 on the subpage, but PR5 is a good bet. Debunked, we are damn good at what we do. Sticky me for some examples if you like, and I'll let you decide and fill in the rest ... I think you'll be suprised, and all White Hat! Probably will join in more threads here ... time permitting. That's the problem with quickly growing companies though ... too little time, especially if you want to do it the right way! I will make a point of it though! Anyway, thanks all for your understanding! Jeff
Oh no. No way. As a researcher for the company, had I stumbled upon the same thing I too would have been worried and would have dug deeper and/or post on a forum to ask for some additional input. We're pretty sure (99%) that what we see is toolbar PR. We know from internal testing that the pages have individual (real) PR though. Thanks for the welcome! We are very good at what we do. Very. As Jeff offers, message him if you need convincing. I do hope to be able to join in more threads. I've known this forum for a while now and do monitor its RSS feeds. Alas, there are only so many hours in a day, right?
On another forum a caching problem from the last days is mentioned where the cache commands, except for the link next to the search result, show a homepage of another web site instead. @http://tinyurl.com/9dolf ps: admin, feel free to remove link if links to other forums are not done.
