I had a domain name registrar contact me today telling me that someone was attempting to register all of the following TLD's with the same name as my .com domain which is my brand name. Anyone else ever encounter this and did you just register all of them so no one else could? I always thought that registering .com, .net and .org was extensive enough but wonder if I should just snatch up all of these too before someone else does? .asia .cn .com.cn .com.hk .com.tw .hk .in .tw
I suspect dirty tricks. We've had those emails countless times over the years, the registrar is just trying to upsell you to the other domains. The chances that your registrar would be aware of what is happening elsewhere is far fetched. Plus the mysterious buyer wouldn't "attempt" to register, they'd just do it.
If you got the email saying to register a .cn domain with that company, then you got the (in)famous we-saw-your-brand-and-ask-if-you-want-to-register-your-.cn-domain-with- us one. It's been reported here and everywhere else. Ignore it.
Thanks guys! The registrar he said he was from is www.chinesenic.net and he was using an email address within that domain so seemed somewhat legit when I looked into it. Hopefully I didn't make myself more vulnerable to anything else by replying to his email, I'll just ignore from now on!
Yeah that is a pretty common trick on domainers some registrars use to attempt to get you to buy every extension to "protect your brand". Just stick to the major extensions and ignore the spam.
