Someone claims that my domain name was previously theirs (stolen)

    Hello,

I recently received an email from/pm from a person that claims that 2 of my domains were once his/hers and were stolen.

I legally purchased these domains from another seller. The domains are legally registered by me and i have proof of it.

This person keeps telling me they wish to pursuit legal action.
Is there any chance that this person will take my domains?

(Anyone know any laws about these issues?)

    Thanks.

That's happened to one domainer whose domain name was legally transferred
from him. But he and the other party managed to eventually resolve it.

As the saying goes, trust...but verify. And that's tricky, considering that one
can sue if they're especially capable of demonstrating their claims and if they
    think it'll solve the problem.

While at it, see if you can learn more about the one you bought it from.

The person you bought it from... did they buy it from someone, or did they register it themselves? If the domain was dropped/expired and then registered by someone else, and they then sold it to you, it looks like its yours fair and square.

This happens way too much. I personally have purchased a few stolen domains, obviously at the time I did not know they were stolen. I sold them back to the original owner for pretty close to what I paid.

Interesting.... I would ask the person to supply proof or hit the road. Even after seeing the proof I may tell the person to hit the road. Six months is too long to wait before they contacted you. Sounds like they have a use for the domain now and want it back.

agree with DomainSubway.com as long as the original owner can proof his/her past ownership.

I don't know if it's a scam or not. Stolen domain names do get resold to unsuspecting customers all the time. Generally, in US law, a good faith purchaser doesn't have the right to his or her purchase because the person who transferred the rights to them only can transfer the rights that they hold. If it was stolen, the transferror didn't have any rights to transfer to you. Your only recourse is to go after the person who sold it to you.

If he can't prove that the name was stolen, tell him to take it to WIPO. If he wants it back badly enough, he will.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have other questions.

If the domain was bought by the person you bought it from, pay no attention to it
or it was dropped just ignore the mail
