I use a few precautions to avoid being scammed, and although people have tried I have never been scammed.

    - Don't be greedy. If a deal sounds too good to be true, it is probably a scam

    - If you don't trust someone, do some background research. Read his post history and look for inconsistencies.

    - If you make a deal but you think it smells, insist on using Escrow.com or Moniker.com Escrow, for your and their security.
Offer to pay all fees for the Escrow. If the deal is really good, and suspicious deals usually are really good, you can afford to pay the fees.
    It's like paying insurance fees.

    - No Escrow: if you are the seller, avoid paypal and use MB (check my sig) to avoid chargebacks.

All4u is correct about the email from GoDaddy.

I have sold over 130 domains ALL from GoDaddy account in the past 3 months. Every one of the sales produced THREE (3) emails from GoDaddy.

The first email from GoDaddy confirms transfer was initiated and contains the email address of the new registrant. (You get this immediately after you initiate the push.)

The second email tells you the domain has been cancelled from your account. (You get this one when the recipient accepts the domain.)

The third email (whidh arrives a few minutes after the second one) ALWAYS contains the following language:

"This email is to confirm the recent change of registrant
    of the following domain name(s):

    DOMAINNAME.COM

The change has been completed and the available information
has been recorded in our system.

If for any reason this information is incorrect or you
feel this change of registrant request was made in error,
please contact us within 15 days at .

    Sincerely,
    GoDaddy.com, Inc."

I do not know if you would be successful at getting a name back through GoDaddy. (I never tried.) But I DO KNOW that they send you the email saying you have 15 days to contact them about it.

    Best,

    Victoria

I use Paypal for small transaction (under 150$) and Escrow for the rest. Most of the time, the scammer are looking for BIG money.
