Years ago we got a call from a man who told us "I am a businessman from Nigeria", we hung up. A couple of weeks later he rang back, we hung up. The third time we had friends around and we decided to put him on speaker and play along. Turns out he was trying to buy some software we'd stopped selling years earlier but somehow he still had a demo copy and needed support. Our "wow" moment was realising that not every phone call is a scam!

That's understandable. There are a lot of these scam calls companies are getting now and trust in random calls has fallen a bit.

Your story suggests that you need to pay attention to every call, but not trust all of them. I guess this understanding comes with experience, doesn't it?

It sure does. I see people saying that they never answer calls from unknown numbers - you know 100% they're not in sales or support roles.

The first story that comes to mind took place back in the 1980's. I was a partner in a software company and we had a strategic relationship with a F50 chemical manufacturer. Our primary contact was a high level, SVP who reported directly to the CEO. He retired and about six months later we got a call from him saying he wanted to get us involved in a new venture. Given his background, experience and rolodex, we were excited to hear what it was and flew a thousand miles to his home for the meeting. He started pitching us on his new Amway business.

It was a "wow" moment and a bit discouraging that an executive like him could be taken in by a scam like that.

No one could describe this situation better:)

Ouch! It such a great mix of "wow" and disappointment to see someone of his caliber caught up in a scam like that. Anyway, It's good experience for you, imo.
