Hello, I would like to know what exactly it takes to run a successful proxy site, one that is not slow and works normally. I currently have shared hosting on Hostgator so I take it that's out of consideration because it needs a lot more bandwidth than that so would getting the $170 per month dedicated server to the trick to have a smooth running server? It will probably have medium traffic as I'm aiming it to the audience of a particular online game, such as Runescape that people would be able to play at place where it's blocked i.e.: at school. Also, is it possible to have such a proxy website that would support things like flash, java and other things that such a browser game requires? I'd love some more information on the subject!
First of all, if you choose shared hosting, HG, GD, DH and all those shared hostings will kick you out. You have to go for proxy optimized shared hosting providers (only 3-4 for now) If you are looking to start those proxy hsared hosting will be good for you. How many proxies are you looking to start? And don't fall for huge BW and space shared hosting deal for low prices. But startwith proxy shared hosting and see how much traffic you have and if you're using too much resources of shared enviornment or not. If you are you will know it by 2 ways: shared provider warning you or worst case shutting down your accouny). Then consider a vps first from companies allowing proxies, but if the proxy can outgrow a vps, then go for a dedicated server. There are many out there with cheap prices like versaweb.com. Most proxy sites will support what you want, but some scripts need to be modded for better performance. CGI proxy is good but keep in mind, it needs a dedciated server of its own so not good diea for starters or even some used-to-proxy-owners. Go for glype or zelune, if you can pay go for proxono (proxono plugin havent failed youtube/myspace vids loading for many onths now while other scripts've failed - but proxon is resource hungry as well) proxy for playing game, you have to highly mod it or hire a freelancer to get custom script because most game sites have levels of security to disable players by web proxy. Unless you do the actual proxy server type (which can cost alot), web proxies are not for excessive gaming and if you even allow 1 perosn to use/play a webbased rpg game, (you ahve to increase file size and timeout limits) and it'll screw your server up or your BW used up by 1 player.
