When editing your phpld do you have to set up all the catergories your self or can you import them from somewhere if so where

Yes, just search google for phpld category dump.
There are several available, some free some paid.

It won't help you with a category dump, but some people have found using one of them to be a mistake. If you use the exact same categories as everyone else then your directory will look like duplicate content, and as a result many of the pages won't be indexed by search engines.

It is good to take the time to at least change an existing structure over time and make it unique.

With "Quick Sub category adder" in phpld V3.2 it is not difficult to add sub-categories.

 

You can import then and you can find them free them online
